Marun (chestnut) is a large breed of cultivated chestnut. It abounds in the hills of the mountain Ucka, mostly in the area around Lovran, Opatija and Moscenicka Draga. Marun is bigger in size, with a shell of lighter shade, easily removed, sweeter than ordinary chestnut, and can grow to a considerable height.

Due to their abundance and undisputed quality, maruns have greatly influenced the gastronomy of this area where they thrive, and have been used since the antiquity for the preparation of various dishes, soups, sauces, fillings and side dishes, as well as cakes and desserts.
